Lumbini Province, Far West Terai
Bardia National Park is Nepal's largest lowland park, a wild stretch of sal forest and grassland along the Karnali River in the far west. Fewer visitors come here than to Chitwan, so the park feels quieter, and it is known for its Bengal tigers, wild elephants, rhinos, gharial crocodiles and the rare Gangetic dolphin in the river. Safaris run on foot, by jeep and by boat with local naturalist guides, and nearby Tharu villages show traditional life in the Terai. You can reach Bardia by a long road journey from Kathmandu or by flying to Nepalgunj and driving from there. October to March is the best time.
