Bagmati, Terai Lowlands
Chitwan National Park, Nepal's first national park, protects grassland, sal forest and river in the southern lowlands and is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is one of the best places in Asia to see the greater one-horned rhinoceros, and it is also home to Bengal tigers, sloth bears, gharial crocodiles and hundreds of bird species. Visitors stay in lodges around Sauraha and explore by jeep, canoe and guided walk. Tharu villages nearby add a cultural side to the trip. The best months are October to March, and the park is about five to six hours from Kathmandu by road.
