Khumbu, Eastern Nepal
The Everest region, or Khumbu, is home to the world's highest mountain and Sagarmatha National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Trails climb through Sherpa villages such as Namche Bazaar, past prayer-flag bridges and the monastery at Tengboche, to Everest Base Camp at about 5,364 metres and the Kala Patthar viewpoint at 5,644 metres. Most trekkers fly to Lukla to begin, and the best weather is March to May and October to November. If you do not want to trek, a mountain flight or a helicopter tour from Kathmandu shows you Everest in a single morning.
