Lumbini Province, Terai
Lumbini is the birthplace of Siddhartha Gautama, the Buddha, and one of the most important pilgrimage sites in Buddhism. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with the Maya Devi Temple marking the spot of his birth, a pond where his mother is said to have bathed, and the Ashoka Pillar, which dates to the third century BCE. A large garden complex holds monasteries built by Buddhist communities from many countries. The grounds are flat and quiet, which makes Lumbini a calm stop on a Nepal itinerary. It lies in the southern Terai, and you can reach it by road or by air to Bhairahawa.
