Visit the birthplace of Buddha on a peaceful pilgrimage tour.
A 2-day pilgrimage to Lumbini, UNESCO World Heritage birthplace of Siddhartha Gautama Buddha, visiting the sacred Maya Devi Temple and the international monastic zone. Lumbini lies in the southern plains of Nepal and is one of the most important Buddhist pilgrimage sites in the world. The Maya Devi Temple marks the spot where, according to tradition, Queen Maya Devi gave birth to Siddhartha Gautama. Beside it are the sacred Puskarini pond and the Ashoka Pillar, an inscribed stone column from the third century BCE that records the visit of Emperor Ashoka. Further on, the monastic zone is divided into an eastern and a western area, with monasteries built by Buddhist communities from many countries in a wide range of styles. The grounds are flat and shaded, so the tour suits travellers of all ages, and your guide explains the history and stories behind each site. You can reach Lumbini by a short flight to Bhairahawa followed by a drive, or by a full day on the road from Kathmandu. October to March is the most comfortable time to visit, because summers in the plains are very hot.
It's possible by flight, but an overnight stay allows more time to appreciate the monasteries and sacred sites.
