Trishuli River Rafting: Cost, Difficulty and Safety Guide

Its warm waters and fun grade II–III rapids suit beginners and families, making it a perfect introduction to river adventure. This guide to Trishuli River rafting explains the typical trips, difficulty, costs, the best season, safety standards, what to wear and bring, how it compares with Nepal's other rivers and how to fit a rafting day into your itinerary.

The Trishuli in a nutshell

The Trishuli flows from the Langtang region toward the Narayani River, and the lower sections near the Prithvi Highway are the usual rafting stretch. Popular one-day trips start near Charaundi and finish a few hours downstream, passing through forested gorges, small villages and sandy beaches. Rapids range from gentle riffles to splashy grade III waves, with plenty of calm sections in between for swimming and photos. Water levels change through the year, so the character of the river varies with the season and the amount of rain.

One-day and two-day trips

A one-day trip usually includes a morning transfer from Kathmandu or Pokhara, a safety briefing, about three to four hours on the river, lunch on the bank and a transfer back. A two-day trip adds a riverside camp or lodge, a campfire and a second morning of paddling. Many operators combine rafting with an onward journey to Chitwan or Pokhara, which saves time and fits neatly into a 10-day itinerary. If you have a spare day in Kathmandu, a half-day run is a good active break from sightseeing.

Difficulty and who it suits

The Trishuli is rated grade II–III depending on water level, which makes it suitable for beginners, families with older children and anyone seeking a fun, low-stress day on the water. You do not need prior experience, but you should be comfortable in water and able to follow instructions. Children are usually accepted from about 8–12 years old, depending on the operator and river level. If you want a bigger challenge, the Bhote Koshi offers grade IV–V rapids, while the Seti River near Pokhara is gentler and more scenic.

Costs

Prices usually range from about USD 40 to 100 per person for a one-day trip depending on whether the price includes transport, lunch and the length of the run, and a two-day trip typically costs more. Compare inclusions: transfers, lunch, safety kayakers, equipment, guides and insurance. See our daily budget guide to place rafting in a wider budget. Be cautious of very cheap offers, which may cut corners on safety.

Best time for rafting

October to December and March to May are the best seasons, with warm weather and moderate water levels. The monsoon (June–September) brings high, fast water and is only for experienced operators, and winter can be cold. If you are travelling in the rainy season, check with your operator about river conditions, and read our monsoon guide.

Safety standards to look for

A reputable rafting company provides certified guides, a safety briefing, properly fitting life jackets and helmets, well-maintained rafts, a safety kayaker on bigger runs and a plan for emergencies. Ask how many guides accompany each group, whether they hold rescue training and whether the operator has insurance. Follow your guide's instructions, keep your helmet on and stay seated in the raft. Make sure your own travel insurance covers rafting.

What to wear and bring

Wear quick-dry shorts or swimwear, a synthetic T-shirt, secure sandals or water shoes and sunscreen. Bring a change of clothes, a towel and a dry bag for valuables. Leave jewellery, cameras and phones at the hotel unless you have a waterproof case, since flips and splashes are common. Tie back long hair, and wear glasses with a retaining strap. Operators normally provide helmets, life jackets and paddles.

Other rivers in Nepal

Nepal has many rafting options: the Bhote Koshi for grade IV–V thrills, the Seti River near Pokhara for gentle scenery, the Kali Gandaki and Karnali for multi-day expeditions and the Sun Koshi for a classic week-long descent. Multi-day trips need more planning and experience. For other activities, see adventure sports in Nepal.

Fitting rafting into your trip

Trishuli rafting links naturally with the route between Kathmandu and Pokhara or Chitwan, so you can raft in the morning and continue by road in the afternoon. It also makes a good family activity in combination with a Chitwan safari or Pokhara. Ask your operator about timing, so you reach your next destination before dark. Official tourism information is available from the Nepal Tourism Board.

Beyond rafting: what else to do on the Trishuli road

The road to Pokhara and Chitwan passes villages, tea houses and viewpoints. Stop for a cup of tea in Mugling, visit the Manakamana cable car if you have time or enjoy a riverside lunch. If you want an overnight, riverside camps and lodges offer simple comfort. With a little planning you can turn a rafting day into a relaxed part of your journey.
