Tsum Valley Trek: Nepal's Sacred Hidden Valley

The Tsum Valley trek leads to one of the Himalaya's most sacred and least-visited valleys. Known as a beyul, or hidden valley, in Tibetan Buddhism, it features ancient monasteries, mani walls and traditional villages. It lies in the Manaslu region and can be done on its own or combined with the Manaslu Circuit. This guide covers permits, an itinerary, difficulty, costs, the best time to go and the culture of the valley.

2. Soti Khola to Machha Khola.
3. Machha Khola to Jagat.
4. Jagat to Lokpa.
5. Lokpa to Chumling.

Stage-by-stage notes

Soti Khola to Jagat. The first days follow the Budhi Gandaki river through warm, forested gorges, with suspension bridges and waterfalls. The trail has many ups and downs.

Jagat to Lokpa. The scenery grows wilder as you approach the entrance to the Tsum Valley.

Lokpa to Chumling and Chhokangparo. The valley opens into terraces and stone-walled villages, with views of Ganesh Himal. Chumling has a small monastery and a lively local culture.

Chhokangparo to Mu Gompa. The upper valley is a landscape of barley fields, yaks and prayer flags. Mu Gompa and Rachen Gompa are important monasteries, and Milarepa's Cave is a pilgrimage site for Tibetan Buddhists.

Permits and requirements

As a restricted area, you must trek with a licensed guide through a registered agency. The Tsum Valley restricted-area permit is charged per week, with a seasonal rate, and you also need conservation area permits for the Manaslu region. Fees and group rules change. See the permit guide and solo trekking rules, and confirm current details with your agency and the Department of Immigration.

Difficulty and altitude

The Tsum Valley is moderate to challenging. Walking days are four to seven hours, with long ups and downs and some exposed trail sections. The altitude is lower than on the Manaslu pass crossing, with sleeping altitudes generally below about 3,700 m, but headaches and fatigue are still possible. Follow our altitude sickness guide and carry insurance that covers helicopter evacuation.

Costs

A guided Tsum Valley trek typically costs USD 1,100–1,900 depending on group size, season and length. Combining with Manaslu raises the total. The restricted-area permit and conservation fees are a significant part of the price. Compare with other restricted-area treks in our budget guide.

Best season

March–May and September–November have the most stable weather. Winter is cold, and the upper valley may be snow-covered. The monsoon brings landslide risk on the lower trail. See best time to visit Nepal for context.

Culture and etiquette

The Tsumba people follow Tibetan Buddhist traditions, and the valley has strong spiritual significance. Walk clockwise around mani walls and chortens, remove shoes in monasteries, dress modestly and ask before photographing people or interiors. Respect any local rules about sacred sites. Our etiquette guide has more advice, and our guide to monasteries and meditation in Nepal explains what to expect inside a gompa.

The monasteries of the Tsum Valley

Mu Gompa. The highest and largest monastery in the valley, home to monks and nuns and a quiet retreat site. It sits near the Tibetan border, with sweeping views of the Himalaya.

Rachen Gompa. A nunnery with a peaceful atmosphere, often visited on the way up the valley.

Milarepa's Cave (Piren Phu). A sacred cave associated with the Tibetan saint Milarepa, set above Chhokangparo. Pilgrims visit for blessings and meditation.

Respect local rules at monasteries: remove shoes, dress modestly, do not touch sacred objects and ask before taking photos inside.

A typical day on the trail

Short days and early finishes leave time to visit monasteries and talk with villagers.

Local customs and daily life

Tsum Valley villagers keep Tibetan traditions of farming, herding and religious festivals. In many villages, families burn juniper incense each morning, spin prayer wheels and walk clockwise around mani walls. Hospitality is generous, but families are also busy with seasonal work. Ask permission before photographing, and consider buying handicrafts or eating in locally owned lodges to support the community.

Health, remoteness and communication

The Tsum Valley is remote, with limited medical facilities and patchy phone coverage. Carry a personal first-aid kit, tell your guide about any medical conditions and make sure your insurance covers helicopter evacuation. Mobile signal may only be available in a few villages, so plan to be offline for much of the trek.

Combining Tsum Valley and Manaslu in one trip

A common 18-day plan runs: drive to Soti Khola, trek up the Budhi Gandaki to Lokpa, spend four to five days in the Tsum Valley, return to Lokpa and continue to Namrung, Samagaon, Samdo and Larkya La, then descend to Dharapani. This route gives you both the quiet cultural valley and the high pass of the circuit, but requires strong fitness and good weather luck. See the Manaslu Circuit guide for the second half of the route.

Accommodation and food

Lodges in the Tsum Valley are simple, with twin rooms and shared bathrooms, and they often serve dal bhat, noodles, momos and Tibetan-style bread. Facilities are more basic than on the Annapurna Circuit. Carry cash in rupees and snacks. Some villages offer homestay-style stays where you can learn about local life.

What to pack

A warm sleeping bag, layers, a down jacket, waterproof shell, trekking poles, sturdy boots and a headlamp. Bring a power bank, since charging is limited. See our packing list.

Combining Tsum Valley with Manaslu

The Tsum Valley adds about 5–7 days to the Manaslu Circuit and is a popular combination. Plan for 16–20 days in total, keep spare days for weather and make sure your permits cover both areas. Manaslu protects its environment through the National Trust for Nature Conservation, which manages the Manaslu Conservation Area.
