Bagmati, Central Nepal
Kathmandu, Nepal's capital, sits at around 1,400 metres in a valley that holds seven UNESCO World Heritage monument zones. In a few days you can see the giant Boudhanath stupa, the hilltop Swayambhunath, the sacred Pashupatinath temple on the Bagmati River and the old royal squares of Kathmandu, Patan and Bhaktapur. Thamel is the traveller's hub with restaurants, gear shops and guesthouses, and the old bazaars around Asan are full of spices, sweets and street food. Most international flights land here, so most trips start and end in Kathmandu. October to April has the clearest weather.
