Upper Mustang Trek: Forbidden Kingdom Permit, Cost and Route

Upper Mustang, the former Kingdom of Lo, is a high desert of ochre cliffs, wind-carved canyons and Tibetan Buddhist monasteries. It was closed to foreigners until 1992 and still feels like another world. It lies in the Himalayan rain shadow, so it is one of the best trekking destinations during the summer monsoon, when the rest of Nepal is wet. This guide explains the permit, the route, trek versus jeep options, costs, the best season and what to expect in this extraordinary region.

Quick facts

Why Upper Mustang?

• A walled medieval capital. Lo Manthang has narrow lanes, whitewashed houses and 15th-century monasteries.
• Sacred caves and monasteries. Chhoser, Luri Gompa and Ghar Gompa are remote and remarkable.
• A rain-shadow climate. Dry and sunny in June–August, when other regions are wet.
• Tibetan culture. Language, architecture and festivals reflect the old Kingdom of Lo.
• The Tiji festival. A three-day masked-dance festival in Lo Manthang, usually in spring (in 2026 it was reported for 14–16 May; dates follow the Tibetan lunar calendar and change each year).

Itinerary options

Trek (13 days)

Kathmandu, Pokhara, Jomsom, Kagbeni, Chele, Syanbochen, Ghami, Charang, Lo Manthang, Yara, Luri Gompa, Tangge, then return via Chhusang or Kagbeni. Trekking lets you meet villagers, cross high passes and experience the landscape slowly.

Jeep tour (8 days)

Drive or fly to Jomsom, then travel by 4×4 to Lo Manthang along the Kali Gandaki valley and onward. Our Upper Mustang jeep tour is a good option for families, older travellers and those with limited time.

Hybrid

Many travellers walk some stages and drive others, particularly on the long, windy stretches between Ghami and Charang.

Stage-by-stage highlights

Kagbeni. The medieval gateway to Upper Mustang, with mud-walled houses, a monastery and a checkpoint where permits are checked. The wind can be fierce in the afternoon.

Chele to Ghami. Cross high passes with views over the gorge and the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges. You pass chortens, mani walls and the longest mani wall in Nepal near Ghami.

Charang. A large village with a 16th-century gompa and a former royal palace. The red-walled monastery is a highlight.

Lo Manthang. The walled capital, with a former royal palace, three main temples and monasteries decorated with ancient murals. Allow a day or two to explore and make day trips to nearby caves and villages.

Return routes. Variations include a loop via Dhakmar, Ghar Gompa, Tsarang and Ghami, or a return along the Kali Gandaki river by jeep.

Permits and rules

You cannot trek independently here. Permits are processed through a registered Nepali agency, and recent policy shifts continue to affect group size. The permit fee is a significant part of the cost, and sources currently conflict on how it is charged: many operator guides still quote USD 500 for the first 10 days plus USD 50 per extra day, while others report a rule change from late 2025 to USD 50 per person per day with no minimum stay. Ask your agency to confirm the current rule in writing before you budget. You will also need an Annapurna Conservation Area Permit. See solo trekking rules and the permit guide for current details.

Difficulty

Walking days are moderate, with ups and downs over passes but no technical sections. The afternoon winds are strong, and the landscape is exposed with little shade. Altitude is high but gradual, mostly between 2,800 and 4,000 m. Read our altitude guide and plan carefully, particularly if you fly or drive quickly from Pokhara to Jomsom.

Costs

Upper Mustang is more expensive than many other treks because of the permit and remote logistics. A guided trek typically costs USD 2,000–3,500 per person including permits, while a jeep tour is similar or slightly cheaper depending on group size. Check current quotes with your agency, and compare other options in our daily budget guide.

When to go

The Tiji festival, the monsoon-free summer and clear autumn all draw visitors. March–May is windy but clear; June–August is dry and warm; September–November is the most popular, with stable weather and clear skies. Winter is very cold, and some lodges close. Compare options in best time to visit Nepal and monsoon travel.

What to pack

Expect strong sun, wind and dust, so pack sun protection, a buff, sunglasses, lip balm, layers for cold mornings and nights, and a good headlamp. A four-season sleeping bag is recommended in spring, autumn and winter. See our packing list.

Culture and etiquette

Upper Mustang is a deeply Buddhist region. Walk clockwise around chortens and mani walls, remove shoes in monasteries, dress modestly and ask before photographing people or murals. Some monasteries forbid interior photography. Our etiquette guide has more detail.

Food and accommodation

Lodges in Upper Mustang range from simple guesthouses to comfortable lodges in Lo Manthang. Rooms are typically twin-share with shared bathrooms, and hot water may be limited. Menus lean on Tibetan-style dishes, such as thukpa and momos, plus dal bhat, pasta and Mustang apple pie. Local butter tea (suja) is an acquired taste but a good way to start a conversation. Water is scarce in some villages, so carry a bottle and purification, and keep hydrated in the dry air.

Combining Upper Mustang with other trips

Upper Mustang pairs naturally with Pokhara and the Annapurna region. Many travellers fly to Jomsom after a stay in Pokhara, visit Muktinath and Kagbeni, then continue north. You can also pair it with the Annapurna Circuit by crossing Thorong La and continuing from Kagbeni, or link it with a Kathmandu and Chitwan holiday (10-day itinerary) by adding extra days for flights and buffers.

Is Upper Mustang worth the price?

The permit and logistics make Upper Mustang one of the pricier trips in Nepal, but few places offer the same combination of landscape, living Buddhist culture and rain-shadow weather. If you are drawn by Tibetan culture and wide, dramatic desert scenery, and you are happy to travel in a small group with a guide, it is excellent value for a once-in-a-lifetime journey. If your budget is tight, consider a shorter jeep tour, travel in a group to share costs, or choose a trek with lower permit fees.

Upper Mustang vs other restricted-area treks

If you want a dry, high-desert landscape with Tibetan culture, Upper Mustang is unrivalled. If you prefer high mountains and glaciers, consider Manaslu or Nar Phu. For a quiet cultural valley, see Tsum Valley.

The history of the Kingdom of Lo

Upper Mustang was once an independent kingdom that grew rich from the salt and wool trade between Tibet and India. Lo Manthang was founded in the 15th century, and the kingdom's rulers (the Lo Gyalpo) kept their title even after Nepal absorbed the region in the 18th century, with the monarchy formally ending in 2008. The old trade culture left a legacy of fortified villages, monasteries and cave dwellings. Understanding this context makes the landscape feel less like a desert and more like an open-air history book.

Wildlife, landscape and geology

The landscape of Upper Mustang is dramatic: eroded canyons, layered cliffs in red, yellow and grey, fossil-bearing rocks (the Kali Gandaki valley is famous for shaligram stones, ammonite fossils that Hindus consider sacred), and wide, windswept plateaus. Wildlife includes blue sheep, Tibetan wolves, snow leopards (rarely seen) and numerous birds. Sparse vegetation and high winds make the region feel remote and timeless.

Etiquette in Lo Manthang

The walled city is a living town, not a museum. Ask before photographing residents, avoid entering private homes unless invited and respect closed doors at monasteries. Most temples charge a small entry fee, which supports conservation. Smile, greet people with tashi delek or namaste, and be patient: life moves at a different pace here.

Health and altitude in Upper Mustang

Although Upper Mustang is high, its approach is gradual compared with Everest or Manaslu. Even so, dry air, wind and strong sun cause dehydration and fatigue, and the move from Pokhara (about 800 m) to Jomsom (about 2,720 m) in a single day can bring on headaches. Spend a relaxed first night in Jomsom or Kagbeni, drink plenty of water, wear sunscreen and lip balm, and monitor how you feel. Medical facilities are limited, so carry a personal first-aid kit, and make sure your insurance covers evacuation from remote areas.

Official information and where to check

Restricted-area permit rules are administered by the Department of Immigration, and general travel information is published by the Nepal Tourism Board. Because the Upper Mustang fee structure has been reported as changing, confirm the current rule with a registered agency and an official source before you pay.

Practical tips

1. Book early for the Tiji festival and autumn.
2. Carry cash in rupees; ATMs are not available.
3. Keep a buffer day for flights to and from Jomsom, which are often delayed by wind.
4. Protect electronics from dust.
5. Buy insurance that covers trekking and evacuation.
